Maybe We Need a Transition RitualThe space between “then” and “now” matters. September is a month of transition. Summer hasn't necessarily disappeared, but something has shifted. The light is changing. Routines are changing. School is starting. Work picks up. The air changes. We begin thinking about what comes next. And yet, most of us aren't particularly practiced at transitioning. We're practiced at stopping one thing and immediately starting another. We leave work and walk into the rest of our responsibilities. We finish a difficult conversation and move directly into dinner. We close the laptop and pick up the phone. We get home from a demanding day and expect ourselves to simply… relax. Sometimes we even climb into bed carrying the entire day with us. The clock and calendar says we've moved on. Our bodies may not have. The Story Think about the last time you had a really demanding day. Maybe nothing particularly dramatic happened. You just had to be on all day… Decisions. People. Noise. Deadlines. Driving. Emails. Caregiving. Problem-solving. Being needed. Then you finally get home. Maybe you eat. Maybe you scroll for a while. Technically, you're done. But you don't necessarily feel done. Your mind is still moving. Your shoulders are still up. You're still thinking about what someone said three hours ago. You're tired, but somehow not settled. So you try to make yourself rest. And sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn't. Maybe the missing piece isn't rest. Maybe it's the transition into rest. The Science Our nervous system doesn't operate according to our schedules. It continuously responds to information from our environment—sensory input, movement, relationships, perceived demands, internal sensations, and what we anticipate will happen next. When the demands change, our physiology has to change with them. That's adaptation. And adaptation takes energy. This is part of why recovery matters. Our bodies aren't designed simply to remain activated indefinitely. We need periods in which demands decrease and physiological systems can recalibrate. But there's an important distinction: Rest and transition aren't necessarily the same thing. We can be physically still while remaining mentally and physiologically engaged with what came before. We can lie down without actually experiencing the shift from doing to being. We can be home without having actually left work. We can be with someone we love while our attention is still somewhere else. And because our brains are prediction machines, context matters. Repeated cues can become associated with particular states and behaviors. That's one reason rituals can be useful. Not because they are magical. Because our systems learn through repetition and context. A consistent cue can help communicate: That was then. This is now. Being Human Maybe we've gotten really good at beginning. Beginning the workday. Beginning the next task. Beginning the next responsibility. Beginning again after something difficult. We're considerably less practiced at ending. And maybe that's part of why rest can feel so elusive. We think we need to learn how to relax. Maybe sometimes we need to learn how to transition. Because recovery isn't the opposite of productivity. Recovery is part of how human beings adapt. We expend. We respond. We connect. We solve. We create. And then– we recover. Not because we've failed to keep going. Because we're human. Practical Application Build a Transition Ritual This doesn't need to become another item on the never-ending self-improvement list. In fact, please don't turn your transition ritual into a 14-step wellness protocol. We have enough things to optimize. Instead, start by noticing. Ask yourself: What am I transitioning from? Work? Caregiving? A stressful interaction? Social engagement? A busy environment? A period of intense concentration? What am I transitioning into? Home? Rest? Sleep? Connection? Creativity? Time alone? Then choose one or two sensory or physical cues that can mark that shift. Maybe: • changing clothes when you get home • taking a short walk before going inside • washing your face after work • making tea • sitting outside for five minutes • listening to the same song on the drive home • stretching or moving your body • putting your phone away • taking a shower • turning the lights down • simply sitting in your car for a few minutes before entering the house There isn't one correct ritual. The important part is that you intentionally create a little space between states. And then notice what happens. Not “Did I do it perfectly?” Instead: Does my body recognize that we're somewhere different now? Maybe that's what we're missing. Not more discipline. Not another productivity hack. Not another thing we're supposed to accomplish before we're allowed to rest. Maybe some of us simply need a way to say: That was then. This is now. We're here.
